Mobile apps have become essential gateways to services, commerce, communication, and social connection. As more people rely on mobile technology, designing for accessibility is no longer simply about meeting compliance requirements, it is about creating experiences that work for people with different abilities.
A human-centred approach helps organisations consider accessibility from the beginning, rather than treating it as a technical feature added at the end of development.
Understanding Mobile Accessibility: Beyond Compliance
Mobile accessibility means making an application usable by people with diverse abilities, including visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive disabilities.
Standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) provide important foundations for accessible design. However, accessibility should go beyond checking technical requirements. Through a Design Thinking and Human-Centred Innovation approach, accessibility becomes an opportunity to better understand how different people experience technology.
For example, technologies originally developed to support accessibility have become useful to everyone:
Voice commands can make hands-free interaction more convenient.

Designing for Inclusivity: Key Accessibility Principles
Before considering specific features, designers need a strong foundation for thinking about accessibility.
The four core accessibility principles are:
Perceivable
Information and interface elements should be presented in ways that users can perceive, regardless of their sensory abilities.
Operable
Users should be able to navigate and interact with the application using different abilities and input methods.
Understandable
Content, navigation, and interactions should be clear and predictable.
Robust
The application should work reliably across different devices, platforms, browsers, and assistive technologies.
Together, these principles provide a useful framework for Problem Framing when designing accessible mobile experiences.
Visual Accessibility Considerations
Visual accessibility covers a wide range of needs, from colour blindness and low vision to complete blindness. An accessible interface should not depend entirely on visual perception.
Text and Typography
Make content easier to read by:
Supporting dynamic text sizing
Using clear and readable fonts
Maintaining sufficient contrast
Avoiding text embedded in images where possible
Providing alternative text when necessary
Typography should remain usable when users adjust their device settings or text size.
Colour and Contrast
Colour should never be the only way information is communicated.
For example, instead of using only red to indicate an error, combine colour with an icon and clear text.
Designers should also ensure sufficient contrast between text and backgrounds and consider how interfaces appear to users with different forms of colour blindness.
Images and Media
Images and icons should communicate meaning clearly. Use descriptive alternative text for functional images, provide descriptions for complex visualisations, and ensure icons have appropriate labels or are recognised by screen readers.
For animations and auto-playing content, users should also have control over whether they continue playing.
Auditory and Speech Accessibility
Not every user can hear audio clearly, while others may have difficulty using voice-based interactions.
Provide Alternatives to Audio
For video and audio content, consider:
Closed captions
Transcripts
Sign language interpretation for essential content
Visual alternatives to system sounds
Independent volume controls
Important information should never depend solely on sound.
Make Voice Interaction Flexible
Voice input and output should also provide alternatives.
Accessible voice interfaces can include:
Support for different speech patterns and accents
Visual feedback when speech is recognised
Adjustable speech rate and volume

Haptic feedback instead of relying only on audio confirmation
The principle is simple: give users more than one way to communicate with the interface.
Motor and Physical Accessibility
Some users may have difficulty with precise movements, sustained actions, or complex gestures. Others may rely on assistive technologies such as switches or voice control.
Touch Targets and Gestures
Make interactions easier by:
Providing sufficiently large touch targets
Spacing interactive elements apart
Offering alternatives to complex gestures
Allowing more flexible interaction timing
Providing clear feedback after interactions
Essential functions should not depend entirely on gestures such as swiping, pinching, or multi-touch.

Consider supporting:

Alternatives to drag-and-drop
Predictive text and autocorrect
The goal is to ensure users can complete important tasks even when a particular input method is difficult or unavailable.
Time-Based Interactions
Avoid forcing users to complete tasks within unnecessary time limits.
Where timing is required, consider allowing users to:

Pause interactions
Receive warnings before timeouts
Stop auto-advancing content
Cognitive Accessibility
Cognitive accessibility focuses on users with different learning, memory, attention, and processing needs. A cognitively accessible interface should reduce unnecessary complexity and make important actions easier to understand.
Clear Structure and Navigation
Use:
Consistent layouts
Clear headings and labels
Visible navigation indicators
Manageable numbers of choices
Easy ways to backtrack without losing information
Users should be able to understand where they are, what they can do, and what happens next.
Simplify Content
Clear communication can make an interface easier for everyone to use.

Short, clear sentences
Manageable steps
Icons alongside text where useful
Summaries for complex information
Avoid unnecessary jargon, particularly when users need to make important decisions.
Prevent and Recover from Errors
Accessible interfaces should help users avoid mistakes and recover when they happen.

Confirmation before important submissions
Auto-save where appropriate
Forgiving interactions
Multiple ways to access important functions
Good cognitive accessibility reduces the amount of information users need to remember and makes the interface more predictable.
